Spaniel Field Trial Development

IMG_7116.JPG

A long-term, standards-driven program for clients who want more than a “trained dog”—they want a dog capable of competing, improving, and performing under real pressure.

At Craney Hill Kennel, field trials aren’t a side offering—they’re part of the standard that shapes everything we do. Our program is designed for serious owners who value correct development, consistent handling, and the kind of repetition it takes to build a dog that can compete at a high level.

We train and campaign English Springer Spaniels and English Cocker Spaniels with a clear focus: produce talented, honest dogs with the manners, drive, and control required to perform when it counts.

High Expectations.

On Purpose.

We believe the fastest way to get an exceptional dog is to hold an exceptional standard. Our expectations are intentionally high—because when you train to a standard most people won’t maintain, you still end up with a dog that is dramatically better than the average.

And we’ll be honest: maintaining that standard is hard. Not because we’re kennel blind—because we’re not. It’s hard because the bar in this sport is often set far too low, and it takes discipline to keep doing things the right way when “good enough” is easier.

One Development Track.

We provide specialized field trial development at our Georgia winter headquarters and throughout our northern Michigan late-spring through early-fall program. That seasonal structure gives our dogs something most programs can’t: variety, momentum, and experience across terrain.

Our grounds and program allow dogs to gain:

real exposure to cover, woods, water, and changing conditions

consistent handling and pressure-proof obedience

confidence through repetition and correct progression

the kind of experience that shows up on the trial grounds

Winter in Georgia is especially valuable—when much of the country is shut down, our dogs keep moving forward.

This Program Is Best For:

  • Owners who want to run the field trial circuit with a professional plan

  • Clients who understand that great dogs take time, not shortcuts

  • People who value accountability, consistency, and honest feedback

  • Those prepared for a multi-year commitment to see what a dog truly is

Field trial development should be viewed as a 2–3 year commitment—to select the right dog, develop it correctly, and campaign it long enough to know whether it has what it takes to win.

And if a dog doesn’t end up being “the one,” the outcome still matters: you should expect a world-class upland shooting dog with a level of training most people never experience.

Dogs in Development

Occasionally we have a dog ready to place. More often, we have carefully selected dogs already in development that may be available to the right home—particularly for clients interested in having a dog campaigned on the spaniel field trial circuit.

This is a premium service and should be approached accordingly—but for the right client, the rewards go far beyond ribbons: progress, friendships, competition, and the satisfaction of running a dog built the right way.

Investment & Commitment

Field trial development is a long-term process. For clients starting with an 8-week-old puppy, typical costs are:

  • $7,200 for the first year of development

  • $14,400–$17,000 per year thereafter

  • plus entry fees, prorated travel expenses, and veterinary care

Most clients should plan on an additional two years of development and campaigning to truly evaluate a dog’s potential at the highest levels.

Alternative option: starting with a trained prospect can range from $7,500–$25,000, depending on the dog and level of training. While the upfront cost may be higher, it can reduce total development time—and most importantly, it can provide greater clarity about what you’re investing in.
