10 Things You’re Doing Wrong With Your Gun Dog
1. Training Inconsistently
Your dog thrives on repetition and routine. Skipping days or switching up commands confuses them.
2. Overusing the Whistle or E-Collar
Too many cues create noise. Your dog tunes you out instead of tuning in.
3. Rushing Steadiness
You’re trying to get the retrieve before building a reliable sit. Don’t trade long-term
control for short-term excitement.
4. Avoiding Yard Work
The field isn’t the place to teach basics. Sloppy delivery, poor recall, and
breaking often stem from skipped foundational training.
5. Not Training on Real Birds
Bumpers are great—but they can’t replicate scent, flush, or flight. Dogs need reps on wild or flight-conditioned birds to truly prepare.
6. Failing to Read Your Dog
You’re pushing when they’re confused or quitting when they need pressure. Good handlers adjust in real time.
7. Ignoring Obedience at Home
A wild dog in the house often means a wild dog in the field. Consistency carries over everywhere.
8. Letting the Dog Lead
If your gun dog decides the pace, the path, or the plan—you’re not hunting as a team. You’re following a problem.
9. Training Too Long
Short, focused sessions build habits. Long sessions often end in frustration—for both of you.
10. Expecting Results Without a Plan
Hope isn’t a training strategy. Clear goals and structured steps produce reliable dogs.
👉 Fix the mistakes. Build a better hunting dog.

Consistency beats intensity. Even light training a few times a week will keep your dog sharp and progressing toward your goals. Fall will be here before you know it—what you do now matters.
We help build the dog you can trust in the field.
A trained dog is only as ready as the human behind the leash. Go prepared.
