Gun Dog Training Suggestions
What Every Gun Dog Owner Needs To Know

6 Ways to Work Your Dog’s Brain
1. Scent Games / Tracking Drills
Let them use their nose. Hide bumpers, birds, or treats in grass or brush and let them work the scent trail. Builds focus, confidence, and nose-drive.
2. Place Work with Duration
Send your dog to a place board or mat and reward calm, still behavior over time. Teaches patience, impulse control, and handler awareness.
3. Problem-Solving Retrieves
Set up a retrieve behind light cover or a small obstacle. They can see the fall—but need to think through how to get it. Builds strategy under pressure.
4. Pattern Drills
Teach a left-right-back casting drill. It keeps them sharp, mentally responsive, and ready to read your cues in the field.
5. Obedience in Distraction
Practice sit, stay, or heel near birds, other dogs, or activity. The brain works hardest when staying calm is hard.
6. Hand-Feeding Engagement Sessions
Use part of their meal to practice eye contact, hand-targeting, and engagement games. Makes training time fun, focused, and personal.
