Teach Your Dog To Problem Solve

Your dog must learn how to learn without the fear of mistakes and punishment prior to formalized training. Regardless of what your dog needs to do in its life, if it is understands to try to do the right thing, it will be more willing to repeat the behavior when it becomes a requirement in later development. Regardless of what your dog’s job is going to be, companion, obedience or field dog, all dogs need to be compliant. Save your shoulder from your dog pulling you down the path. Have a dog that is excited to be obedient.

It will not be right on the field if it is not right at the heel position. Your yard work needs to be solid. If you are walking your dog at heel (off lead), blow the stop whistle, and your dog does not stop as you continue walking, then he will not stop for you when he is far away from you.

This is because the dog’s response to commands depends on consistent training and reinforcement. If the dog does not obey at close range, it is unlikely to do so at a distance. Proper heel work establishes control and sets the foundation for reliable off-lead behavior.
