Learning to Like the Leash

*Todd’s Field Notes*

Watch this puppy when Todd reaches for the leash. He’s interested, engaged and ready to be part of whatever comes next. That’s something we want to build on.

Using a clicker and treats, Todd is helping him learn that putting on the leash is a good thing. Each little repetition gives the puppy a chance to figure out the routine and get rewarded. He keeps coming back, looking up and wanting another go.

Before we ask for more, we want a young dog comfortable with these everyday moments. Having a leash put on may seem like a small thing, but it’s a routine we’ll use throughout his life. It deserves a thoughtful introduction.

There will be time for heeling and more structured work. Today, we’re building familiarity with the leash and encouraging a puppy who enjoys learning with us.

**Todd’s Note**

A puppy who wants to take part gives you something to build on.
